DOORS AND WINDOWS
one of the most persistent security problems found on
Rednour Properties communities is the propping open of doors that are
intended to be closed and/or locked. Whenever a door that is supposed
to be secured is propped open, the safety and security of the whole
building is compromised. A propped open door is an open invitation for
anyone to access the building.
Propped doors also provide an easy route for the travel
of smoke and fire within a building. In fact, certain doors, such as
those leading into a stairwell or opening into certain corridors, are
required by law to be closed and latched. By propping fire doors, you
will be violating the law in addition to jeopardizing the safety of
others.
After entering through a locked door, be sure the door
relocks behind you. If the door does not close and secure properly,
report the problem to Facilities Services at 606-663-4887.
An open window provides another easy means to enter the
building. Make sure you close and lock all windows when you leave.
UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL
As a member of the Rednour Properties communities, you
will become familiar with the people who should normally be within
your work or living area. Whenever you observe someone acting
"suspiciously" or a person who is obviously out of place, try to
obtain a general description of the individual. Call the Rednour
Properties Security Department at 606-663-4887and report your
suspicions.

Keeping Children Safe
 |
Teach your child
that if he/she does not personally know a person or has not been
introduced to a person by his/her parents; the person is to be
considered a stranger. |
 |
Have a "code word"
for your child. If a stranger asks the child to come with them, the
child should ask for the "code word." If the person does not know
the "code word", the child does not go with that person.
|
 |
If the child is
grabbed by a stranger, tell them to yell, "He's not my daddy" or
"She's not my mommy." |
 |
If your child is
ever unsure about someone's intentions, teach them to trust their
feelings and run away. |
 |
Know your
children's friends and where they play. |
 |
Instruct your
child to report to you suspicious persons or attempts by unknown
adults to approach them or become friendly with them.
|
 |
Instruct your
children to not accept rides or gifts from anyone without your
approval. |
 |
Tell your children
to check with you before going anywhere with anyone.
|
 |
Immediately check
any delay in your child's return home.

Theft from
Motor Vehicles
Most thefts from vehicles take place during the late
night hours; however we have recently seen an increase in thefts from
motor vehicles during the day. In these cases, valuables were left in
plain sight and the unknown suspect(s) broke out a window and grabbed
the valuables. Many of our thefts from vehicles occur due to vehicles
being left unlocked. Make yourself less vulnerable to theft by
following the recommendations below.
 |
Secure your
vehicle by locking all doors and rolling up the windows.
|
 |
Remove all
portable stereo equipment, CD's, cell phones, radar detectors, and
other similar equipment from your vehicle. If this is not possible,
make an attempt to hide them from view. |
 |
Remove all
personal property such as purses and wallets. |
 |
Do not leave
packages visible in your vehicle. |
 |
Park in well lit
areas or areas of high traffic/visibility. |
 |
Do not leave your
vehicle running or your keys in the vehicle unattended.
|
 |
Report suspicious
activities in parking lots to the
Rednour Properties Communities
immediately. |
 |
Check your vehicle
daily to ensure that it has not been damaged or broken.

Telephone
Tips
 |
Do not list your
address in the phone book. |
 |
Use your first
initial and last name in the phone book. |
 |
When you are not
home, use an answering machine. Have the message say that you cannot
come to the phone, not that you are not home. |
 |
Do not give any
personal information to anyone over the phone. |
 |
Never give
information to "wrong number" callers. If they ask which number they
reached, ask them which number they attempted to dial.
|
 |
Always give the
impression that you are not alone. |
 |
If a call is
harassing or obscene, hang up immediately. Do not listen to them or
show any type of emotional response. Report continual harassment to
the police and the phone company. |
 |
Blow a whistle
into the phone to discourage obscene or harassing phone calls.
|
 |
Consider changing
to an unlisted phone number.

Phone Scam
Warning
Do not respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages
which tell you to call an "809" Phone Number.
This is a very important issue of Scam Busters because
it alerts you to a scam that is spreading extremely quickly - can
easily cost you $24,000 or more and is difficult to avoid unless you
are aware of it. We would like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam
to our attention. This scam has also been identified by the National
Fraud Information Center and is costing victims a lot of money. There
are lots of different permutations of this scam.
Here is how it works:
You will receive a message on your answering machine or
your pager, which asks you to call a number beginning with area code
809. The reason you are asked to call varies. It can be to receive
information about a family member who has been ill, to tell you
someone has been arrested or died, to let you know you have won a
wonderful prize, etc. In each case, you are told to call the 809
number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days,
people unknowingly return these calls. If you call from the U.S., you
will apparently be charged $2,425 per minute. Or, you will get a long
recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone
as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you
get your phone bill, you will often be charged more than $24,100.00.
Why it works:
The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin
Islands (The Bahamas). The 809 area code can be used as a
"pay-per-call" number, similar to 900 numbers in the U.S. Since 809 is
not in the U.S., it is not covered by U.S. regulations of 900 numbers,
which require that you be notified and warned of charges and rates
involved when you call a "pay-per-call" number. There is also no
requirement that the company provide a time period during which you
may terminate the call without being charged. Further, whereas many
U.S. phones have 900 number blocking to avoid these kinds of charges,
900 number blocking will not prevent calls to the 809 area code.
We recommend that no matter how you get the message, if
you are asked to call a number with an 809 area code that you do not
recognize and/or investigate further and just disregard the message.
It is important to prevent becoming a victim of this scam, since
trying to fight the charges afterwards can become a real nightmare.
That is because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both
your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want
to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply
providing the billing for the foreign company. You will end up dealing
with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.
Things are about to get worse, because that infamous off-shore area
code (809) is in the process of breaking up into smaller chunks, and
you will soon have to think twice about calling any of the following
area codes:
242, 246, 264, 268, 284, 345, 441, 473, 664, 758, 767,
784, 787, 868, 869, 876 as well as 809.
